2 RAHSAANATHON: The wonderful Cafe Stritch in San Jose hosts this annual tribute to late jazz icon Rahsaan Roland Kirk, who was a gifted and unique musician — perhaps best known for playing two or three saxophones at once on stage — as well as a force of nature who had strong opinions on politics, art and other matters of consequence and never tired of expressing them. This year’s Rahsaanathon features a top-flight lineup, including trombonist Steve Turre, a longtime member of Kirk’s band; reed and trumpet great James Carter; bassist Marcus Shelby; Oakland blues singer Terrie Odabi and more. On Aug. 7 (Kirk’s birthday), musician and author John Kruth will perform songs and read from his Kirk biography “Bright Moments.” Note, Cafe Stritch is an intimate club, and events will sell out.
